About Dr. Julian

My Background

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, serving children and families across the state of Michigan.

I completed my Bachelor's in Psychology at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN, and earned a joint doctoral degree in Clinical and Developmental Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. I went on to complete a clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center, with a specialization in Early Childhood. I then moved to Michigan for a postdoctoral fellowship in Developmental Science at the University of Michigan. I transitioned into a clinical faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan Medicine, where I was an attending psychologist with the Infant and Early Childhood Clinic and the Anxiety and OCD Clinic. In this context, I provided clinical care, conducted research, and provided training to psychology, social work, and psychiatry trainees and professionals. I have published on topics related to parent-child relationships, maternal mental health, adoption from institutional care, and relationship-focused interventions in infancy and early childhood; see my publication record here.

Clinical Specializations

Early Childhood (birth to early elementary age)

Assessment: Young children can be especially difficult to understand, as they are typically unable to tell us in words what they are thinking and feeling. In turn, assessment of young children requires a specialized skillset.  I conduct comprehensive psychodiagnostic assessments that result in diagnoses and specific recommendations for therapy and parenting. I have completed hundreds of psychodiagnostic assessments for young children, and have trained both students and professionals in best-practices in early childhood mental health assessment.

Psychotherapy: I have training in parent-child dyadic psychotherapy (e.g., approaches from Infant Mental Health and Parent Child Interaction Therapy), play-based approaches (e.g., psychodynamic play therapy), parent support approaches (e.g., strategies from Parent Management Training, Strong Roots, and Circle of Security) and trauma treatment (e.g., Child Parent Psychotherapy).

Anxiety and OCD

One of my long-time clinical passions is working with children and teens who experience anxiety and OCD. While in Pittsburgh, I worked for two years at an Intensive Outpatient Program for children and teens with OCD, and received in-depth training in Exposure and Response Prevention with a wide variety of OCD and anxiety symptoms. At the Yale Child Study Center, I trained in SPACE, which is an evidence-based approach to treating anxiety and OCD that involves working primarily or solely with parents.  I have training and experience with a wide variety of diagnoses, including OCD, separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobia, panic disorder, and selective mutism, and have treated these diagnoses in children as young as preschool-age up through young adults.

Personal

I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with my husband. Our dog, Greta, and cat, Bennett, provide us with endless entertainment, and both make frequent appearances in tele-health sessions. I love to travel (current favorites are Kenya and Dominica), and feel most at peace when I'm surrounded by nature. The images throughout my website are from my trips to Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta, Canada. When I’m not working, you can usually find me elbow-deep in clay in my home pottery studio, curled up with a good book, or on a walk with my dog.
